Characterization and mechanical properties of one-part geopolymer based on a pure metakaolin

Geopolymers are amorphous silicate polymers that have been extensively studied due to their applications, scientific and technical relevance, potential as cement in substitution Portland. Much of the focus has use precursors aggregates rarely pure homogeneous with tailings being very common. The presence these impurities complicates interpretation some spectral methods, mainly infrared spectrometry. Therefore, this research focuses on a nearly kaolin main precursor, having only trace iron titanium, along other almost reagents, achieve an ideal geopolymer. It was possible produce metakaolinite, resulting material good size particle (8.24µm) surface specific area (6.57m2/g). XRD result shows calcination process resulted 100% material. FTIR data revealed H2O NaCO3 More important, Si-Al-O various bands located between 1100 500cm-1 validate polymerization reaction effectiveness. SEM-EDS analyses demonstrated Na2SiO3 NaOH were complete, concerning finer metakaolinite particles comprised material’s matrix. However, coarser lamellae, 15-35µm range, did not react completely; thin border layer enriched sodium most interior maintained its composition. traces titanium influence reaction. Compressive strength values geopolymer presented range 25 35 MPa.
